OLYMPIA – Gov. Jay Inslee today announced he is appointing Vikki Smith as director of the Washington State Department of Revenue.

“The Department of Revenue plays a critical role in funding the state’s essential public services,” Inslee said. “Each year, the agency collects tax revenue that directly supports our schools, social and health services, environment, economic development and safety of Washingtonians. Vikki has the right combination of leadership, vision and experience to lead the agency.”

Smith has spent her entire career with Revenue, starting in 1970 as a summer temporary clerk and working her way up through the ranks. In her 45-year career, Smith has served in many of Revenue’s divisions, championing the continuous improvement of customer service to taxpayers.

She’s been an innovator in the use of technology to make paying taxes in Washington easy to understand and do, overseeing projects that have earned national recognition.

In 2012, Smith was recognized by the Federation of Tax Administrators with its highest honor – the Harley T. Duncan Leadership and Service Award. She has also earned several Governor’s awards.

As Director of the state Department of Revenue, Smith will oversee an agency with a budget of about $100 million and a staff of 1,100.

Smith has been serving as Revenue’s acting director since January 2015. Her appointment takes effect immediately.
