Be a 2008 Summer Reader!
Young People can receive a Certificate of Recognition from Governor Gregoire, State Librarian Jan Walsh, and Superintendent of Public Instruction Terry Bergeson
Children can receive a certificate by joining a summer reading program at a participating public library or school. Teachers, principals, and librarians can access the certificate template on the Resources page of this website. The certificate template can be personalized and presented to children who meet the goal set by their local 2008 school or library summer reading program. Letters from Governor Gregoire to teachers and principals, librarians, and children also are available on the Resources page.

As governor and as a mom, Governor Christine Gregoire believes that one of the best things children and families can do is develop a love for books. To maintain and enhance reading habits and skills, it is important that children read for at least 20 minutes each day — especially during the summer months. Participating in a summer reading program at a local public library or through school is a fun way to ensure that reading becomes a vital summer activity.
Boys and girls who complete a 2008 school or library summer reading program can receive a special Certificate of Recognition from a participating teacher or librarian. The certificate was created in partnership with State Librarian Jan Walsh, Superintendent of Public Instruction Terry Bergeson, and Governor Gregoire. They believe that summer reading achievement by children in Washington State deserves to be recognized and celebrated! The Washington State Library is continuing the Washington Summer Reading Blog, a place where middle-school aged library patrons can share reviews of their favorite books and communicate with one another about what they’re reading. In an effort to make it easy for librarians and teachers to roll this blog into existing summer reading programs, the Washington State Library has come up with a list of marketing suggestions and promotional materials. To address concerns about Internet safety, all postings and comments on the blog will be moderated.
