The Higher Education Steering Committee

The steering committee was created by Engrossed Second Substitute Senate Bill 5182 during the 2011 legislative session. The group is responsible for reviewing the coordination, planning and communication for Washington state higher education and for establishing the purpose and functions of the Council for Higher Education.

The steering committee will also consider options for:

  1. creating an effective and efficient higher education system and coordinating key sectors including through the P-20 system;

  2. improving coordination of institutions of higher education and sectors with specific attention to strategic planning, system design, and transfer and articulation;

  3. improving structures and functions related to administration and regulation of the institutions and programs including financial aid, GET, federal grants, new degree program approval, authorization to offer degrees, reporting performance data and minimum admission standards; and

  4. deciding the composition and mission of the Council for Higher Education.

The steering committee will recommend legislation for the 2012 session. These recommendations will create the structure that will be in place when the Higher Education Coordinating Board is abolished July 1, 2012.

Gov. Gregoire serves as chair of the steering committee.
