A Partners In Learning Grant
Background
- In May 2004, Washington entered into a public-private Strategic Partnership with Microsoft to collaboratively further teaching and learning abilities of teachers and students through innovative, technology-based approaches to improving student achievement.
- Washington was one of only six states selected to participate in Microsoft's Partners in Learning education investment program.
- In June 2005, a $2.5 million Partners in Learning grant was jointly awarded to Cheney School District and Eastern Washington University for a project called Learning Transformed.
Goals
The goals of Learning Transformed are:
- To use and test technology-rich assessment, remediation and instructional tools in reading, writing and mathematics classrooms at Cheney Middle School and High School. The project will explore the best ways to use technologically-rich instructional tools effectively to differentiate instruction and improve student learning.
- To create a professional collaborative culture that leads to the continuous improvement and change in the Cheney School District and Eastern Washington University that is required to transform an above-average school to an outstanding school.
- By the end of year five, Cheney School District will show a 20% improvement in the number of students who meet state standards over and above the state average of WASL improvement in the same time period.
- A longitudinal observational study comparing classroom practice in year one to classroom practice in year five will demonstrate significant change in classroom instruction to more student-centered, constructivist models of teaching.
- A longitudinal observational study comparing professional collaborative school climate in year one to year five will demonstrate increased trust and ability to change practice based on student need.
- Eastern Washington University's establishment of district-wide Professional Development Schools.
