Gov. Gregoire celebrates opening of Northwest African-American Museum
For Immediate Release: March 8, 2008
SEATTLE – Gov. Chris Gregoire today celebrated the opening of the new Northwest African-American Museum in Seattle.
“I am certain that Washingtonians and people from far and wide will come to experience the Northwest African-American Museum” said Gregoire. “The rich history of the region’s African-American community is on full display here -- from the hard times to the good times -- and everything in between.”
The governor was pleased to be able to participate in the opening of the museum alongside community leaders. The state provided $2.5 million in funding for the Urban League Village and the African-American Museum.
“The governor has been a strong supporter of the Northwest African-American Museum,” said Carver Gayton, executive director of the Northwest African-American Museum. “The museum has been in the hearts and minds of the Seattle community for a generation. The opening of the museum is the culmination of the efforts of leaders such as Governor Gregoire.”
